Santorini Island In History

Santorini is, without doubt, one of the most renowned islands in the Aegean region as well as in the Mediterranean sea in general. Not only does it have the most astonishing sunset that a person can lay eyes on, but also is proud to exhibit a long history that is related to its landscape. Santorini is actually called the volcano island. On Santorini lies the famous volcano whose eruption in the ancient times was the cause that changed the course of human history. It is thought to be the second largest volcanic eruption for as long as humans are walking the earth.

The story wants the island of Santorini to have surfaced the crust of the earth in the prehistoric era. The island is actually composed of five small islands of solidified lava in a formation of a ring around the volcano’s central tip. These islands are: Thirassia, Aspronesi, Mikrà Kameni, Palea  Kameni and Nea  Kameni.

In the beginning, the whole volcano used to be above water until the eruption happened. It was so violent that it caused it to submerge. In the present time, only the eastern edge of the ancient crater is  above water and thus visible. Legend has it that the same explosion was the reason why the ancient city of Atlantis was destroyed. Plato’s narrations include many references to this particular event and is the best preserved source that we have. oia suites What was left of the initial formation was a wide half moon shaped bay, which was named  "Caldera".
