Traditional Products & Places In Crete

In Heraklion there are numerous important museums and cultural institutions that the visitor can enjoy. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the largest in Greece and gathers very important finds from all over the prefecture, finds from the Neolithic period, representative samples of the Minoan period of course, sculptures of the classical and Hellenistic era but also a model palace of Knossos. The Historical Museum contains exhibits from the time of the Byzantines, the Venetians and the Turks, while objects of folk art are exhibited, as well as a representation of a typical old Cretan house. Remarkable is also the Municipal Museum of the Battle of Crete and the National Resistance with heirlooms from the struggle against the German army. The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum in Myrtia, the village where the author came from, is of particular interest. Samples of the flora and fauna of the place can be seen at the Museum of Natural History on Sophocles Venizelou Avenue in Heraklion. Ecclesiastical art exhibitions take place in the Basilica of St. Catherine of Sinai.

As far as the products of Heraklion are concerned, the prefecture has a large agricultural production and the various products are distinguished for their quality. 5 star hotels crete The main crop is olives from which comes excellent olive oil that is distributed throughout the country. The same is true of grapes, raisins and wine from large vineyards. Fresh fruits and vegetables are also produced in large quantities. Kalitsounia, mizithra and raki are still well-known Cretan products that are produced - and of course consumed - in this part of the island.
