Summer In Amazing Attica Riviera

Sounio is located on the southernmost point of Attica. It is a rocky cape, which rises almost vertically from the sea at a great height, forming at the foot of this small cove. Sounio is famous for its important geographical location. It was the first place that a visitor can see when sailing from the Cyclades or Asia Minor to Piraeus. In recent years, the wider area has been declared a national park, due to its high environmental importance. beach hotels near athens greece

In the area where today are the ruins of the temple of Poseidon, in ancient times, there was not a temple built, as it is today but rather just a sacred spot dedicated to the god, which was surrounded by two large kouros. The first time that the temple began to be built was in the early 5th century BC. It was a bit smaller than the classic one that was rebuilt later. The temple was totally ruined by the Persians in 480 BC, before it was completed.

Another hidden jewel of Attica is the Sounio National Park. It was founded in 1971 and is considered to be the smallest park in Greece. The most amazing part of the place is  called "Chaos". It must have been created by the fall of the cave roof that existed in the area. Sounio National Park is a unique mineral and archeological treasure and can be explored by following many possible alternative routes.
