Infos About Sydney Opera House

In 2007 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee wrote about the Sydney Opera House  in an expert evaluation that “It stands by itself as one of the indisputable masterpieces of human creativity, not only in the 20th century but in the history of humankind.”

Today, Sydney opera house is Australia's top tourist destination, with over 8.2 million visitors each year, and one of the world's most important performing arts centers, with over 2000 acts presented 363 days a year for over 1.5 million people.

Tubowgule was the name given to the ground on which the Sydney Opera House stands by its traditional guardians, the Gadigal of the Eora Nation. The concept of a dedicated performing arts center in Sydney had been considered for decades, but it did not gather enough political impetus to become a reality until the mid-1950s. It was a watershed moment for Australia, whose economy was booming thanks to record numbers of post-World War II immigration from Europe. Following the end of the war, a freshly hopeful nation sought to define itself.

The curtain opened on the Opera Hall's first production - Prokofiev's epic War and Peace by the Australian Opera – on September 28, 1973, over a month before its official opening by Her Majesty the Queen. The Sydney Symphony Orchestra presented works by Wagner in the Concert Hall for the first time, with famed Swedish vocalist Birgit Nilsson and conductor Charles Mackerra.
